Okay!! Okay!!

I promise that I will write soon!! I have so much to write about!! hahahahaahahahahahahah

Sunday 15 July 2012

I am still alive...don't worry.

Okay, so again I am crap and have been lagging on the blogging but I am saving up exciting things for you. Well I left the city and moved back to the beach. It's amazing. I literally live across the street from the beach, I fall asleep to the sound of the waves now instead of whistles and horns. Okay, so the waves aren't the only thing that I hear, I also fall asleep to the sound of the wind blowing through the trees in front of my house. Life is tough.
I have my own little 2 room house - well a bedroom and a kitchen. But it's big enough for me. I live beside two friends and it's nice that we have our own little community down here. We usually spend evenings drinking beer out of one of our porches.
Did I mention that I totally lucked out and got this beauty for $150 a month? Most places this close to the beach are about $150 a night. It pays to know people in Bali.

I am not living in my new house completely alone but before you start getting excited, I found a puppy in a garbage pile and brought him home with me. I called him The Kraken, mostly so I can yell, "Release the Kraken" on the beach and let him run free. He's super cute and a little bit of a shit but he's mine now. He's also got an AWESOME case of mange and has no fur on his belly or butt. I am taking him to the vet soon to get a shot, plus other essential puppy vaccines. He is so freaking cute. Yesterday I went for a walk to get dinner and realized about 5 mins into the walk he was following me so I let him come with me and it was great until he got scared by a crowd of people and refused to walk anymore so I had to carry him to the food place. I got some interesting looks. Apparently people in Bali don't carry dogs places.
Oh and right now he is defending the porch from Spotty the slightly retarded Dalmatian/mutt cross. I think he's winning too even though Spotty is 3 times the size of him. Go Kraken :D

Some not so good news- I got stopped by the cops and didn't have enough $$ to pay a bribe so I got a ticket and might have to go to court. Eek! I am trying to find a way out of this. Apparently I need to call the lady I rented the bike from. I should get on that soon.

Work is going good. Made some friends- Go Team Kate! Classes are okay. They aren't great but it means that I get to live in Bali so I can't complain too much. It's work so you know how it goes.

Thursday 5 July 2012

Okay so I suck....

I know! I know!! It's be forever. I don't call, I don't write and so on and so forth.

But to be perfectly honest I really haven't done anything that exciting lately. I'm am just getting into a routine and getting on with life.

Yesterday was my one month Bali-versary. Yep, I have been here for a month. Shit, time flies, eh? Started work, it's going good. Is it the greatest job in the world - no, not really. Is it okay enough to keep me in money and living in Bali -yes.

I've made some friends too. On Sunday or Monday I am moving next door to a girl from Vancouver and another girl from Australia. I am so stoked to move down to the beach. The place that I am moving to is AMAZING. It's a little 2 room house literally across the street from the beach. But the end of the beach that is a little bit too far for the annoying tourists to come down but not too far to walk into town along the beach path. It's the same price as my place in the city but 232352564256 times nicer.

Oh did I mention that it comes with a dog? Yes, I got a dog. Her name is Shorty due to her tiny stumpy legs on her almost average sized body. But she is very cute and kind of came with the house. I feel like we were meant to be as kate (ka-TAY) is Indonesian for dwarf/midget.

On that note - ka-TAY apparently is the new pronunciation of my name so let the hilarity ensue. Some of the Balinese/Indonesian people think it's really funny that my name is Kate because I am so much taller than about most people here.

Ok...I'm going to go to the beach. Maybe something interesting will happen there?\

Gotta pressie for ya....

So some people (there was more than one of you) who will remain nameless were complaining that there weren't enough pictures on the blog....

Sooo.......here ya go....

To scoot or not to scoot that is the question

Okay to begin with can I ask, how many bastardizations of "To be or not to be" have there been....how many have I made?? Hahaha

Aaaaaannnnyyywaayyyy.....scooters.

Walking to work every day for a week I have realized that the sidewalks in Bali (or at least Denpasar) might be more dangerous than the roads. Walking even 15 minutes can feel like you are playing a game with the Reaper. Firstly, there aren't always sidewalks. The sidewalk placement is sporadic at best; one side of the street can have sidewalks and the other can have nothing or a sidewalk can abruptly end leaving the walker suspended in a state of where now. Secondly, if you do find a sidewalk there are no guarantees that it will be intact. Walking to work is sometimes the most exciting part of my day, I look at it like a memory game of sorts. You have to remember what slabs are okay to walk on, which ones felt a little wobbly yesterday and which ones have just plain vanished or cracked in half. The missing ones are my favourite because you actually know what you are getting with them. The ones that seem fine and the ones that are a little wobbly are where you have problems because if I have learned anything from my 2 weeks in Bali, its is not to trust anything. That sounds worse than I meant it to, I don't mean that people in Bali aren't trustworthy, I guess I mean is that there are always surprising little extras. Every step I am waiting for the last step before a slab goes and I fall into the open drain below it. I have seen into these drains. Believe me, you DO NOT want to fall into them. Not that I can think of any reason that any drain would be pleasurable to fall into.

Plus walking you are at the mercy to everyone that you walk past and it might seem a little mean but I am really sick of saying Hello to every person I walk past in a day. Wow, I am a dick. These people are saying "Hello" to me and all I can think is "Crap, I have to say hello to someone else".

All this taken into consideration with the fact that it will soon be about 40 degrees everyday, I decided to get a scooter. I can hear the gasps from everyone who knows me quite well and has seen the bruises that I can get from falling over while standing completely still. I am not taking this decision lightly and I am practicing before I go out and play in traffic.

I rented the bike off a "friend" of Darmi's (she is a lady who's restaurant I go to almost every night and she is helpfully teaching me Indonesian). I say "friend" because I am pretty sure everybody in Bali is a "friend" to everyone else. This friend had to ask Darmi her name so I am guessing that they are pretty tight. But whatever it worked out useful for me. So this lady who's name I totally forget drove me the 2 minutes back to my place and showed me how to work the bike. I'm not sure if it is just me that found this problem but it is very hard to maneuver a scooter or bike in tight spaces and at slow speeds. This attempt at riding my scooter in my driveway while really not knowing what I was doing had the rental lady and her son (?) in stitches. But they thankfully tried to hide it from me, which I thought was kind of them.
Left in the possession of her "very best" bike, I decided that the thing to do was to drink away the nerves and wait til the next morning and practice on the streets.

I woke up at 5am and tentatively started the bike and tried to get it out of the driveway. A helpful little frog hopping in front of my scooter helped me practice stopping suddenly. What a guy!! Out of the driveway and on the open road, I was free....going about 10 miles an hour and my feet sticking out to the sides like a small child whose training wheels have just been taken off. I made it to the bottom of the street with out much difficulty and then remembered that I needed to go back to get home. Zooming up the street at my earth shattering , record breaking 10 miles an hour I was passed in no particular order: a man pulling a garbage can, a teenager on a bike and a 2 legged puppy who was walking on its front paws....Okay I might have made that last one up.  BUT I made it home and didn't fall off, that's the main thing.

The next day I did the same thing and woke up at 5am when the roads were still relatively quiet, so I decided to venture off my street and on to the more busy road that crosses with it. Oh yes on Tuesday I was learning how to turn corners!! I know! Turning the wide corner on to the main road I felt on top of the world. I had made it around a corner with out putting my feet on  the road to guide me or to keep me from pummeling the 2 feet to my inevitable death on the road below. My new sense of adventure lead my down the road, but I wasn't feeling THAT adventurous so I turned on to a road that I know fairly well from my daytime jaunts around the hood....What I didn't know is that this street is where they have the night market. Now in Bali the night market runs from about 10pm to whenever they feel like closing in the morning (so after 5am). So now not only do I have to try and make sense of this new bike, I have to look out for people, carts and other bikes. I firmly put my feet down about this situation....no really. I kiddy-pushbiked it through the market. Feeling exhilarated at my brush with a crowded marketplace, I went home to get ready for work.

This morning was day 3 of my learning experience and I know knew to miss out the market street so I went a little bit further and went up the next main street. Yeah, that wasn't the next main street...It was what they call a "gang" in Bali. So basically a narrow street or alley off a main street with houses on either side. But what the heck, I like an adventure until you ride a bit to far and disturb two sleeping dogs who jump up and start growling at you. My mind was racing at how if I had to, I could pick up the bike and throw it at the dogs. But I managed to turn the bike around in time and race home. I was going to try riding my bike to school today but I got home and noticed my gas gauge was almost on empty. Maybe tomorrow.....hahahaha

The past few days walking to work I have been observing and trying (unsuccessfully) to learn the rules of the road in Bali. The only thing that I have understood so far is, there are no rules. There is a sense of "this is my space and this is yours. If you are going to slowly in front of me I will beep once and go around of you". It is an organized chaos. I can deal with organized chaos, my life is organized chaos. It is a state that I understand well. Plus I really have no prior driving knowledge to get in the way so I figure that I will go back to Canada and be the best driver there......

xx

It's a shorty today....

I really want a fucking tuna melt.....I miss tuna. I love that the only thing that I really miss from Canada is canned tuna. Also maybe hummus.
Waaaaah!! I want a tuna melt with hummus and veggies now......

Sing Sing Death House

So i had a little jaunt to Singapore on Thursday, it is a right of passage ( and also a governmental neccesity) to get a visa and do a visa run to Singapore so you can legally work in the country. Crazy I know. Now, you might ask why I say right of passage.......it is an intense day, you get the first flight out and the last flight home all the time spending the day in a mega city in 34 degree heat.
Now I have been in Bali for almost 2 weeks now and it gets HOT here but none of the buildings are over 5 stories so there is always at least somewhat of a breeze coming through... But I digress. Yes, Singapore....

So I woke up at 2:30am so I could get to the airport in time for the check in and all that jazz. It turns out that the main roads in Bali (especially the bypass to the airport) might be jam packed during the day rendering it almost useless trying to get anywhere in any timely fashion, this is not the case at 3am. So I got to the airport in record time and I know it is surprising but there is nothing open at an airport at 3:45 in the morning. I know, I was shocked too. There was soccer/football (I provided options depending on where you are reading this from) on a tv though- Netherlands v someone. Hey, it was 3:45am I can't be expected to remember everything.

I will save you the non-events of Ngurah Rai International Airport at 4am....I read my book. It was thrilling :) And then like that we were airborne...ok yes other stuff happened but it really isn't noteworthy.
So on the plane, one would think that would be the perfect time to catch a little nap, right? Well let me tell you that my body doesn't react to things like most other people's do. This was the type that my mind went into overdrive while my eyes couldn't stay open- it was fun. Now the flight itself was pretty ummmm interesting- people reading in England, it was basically an Asian Easyjet but cheaper. Now if you have never flown Easyjet, it is a low cost budget airline where all the basic things like water, food and assigned seats inside the plane cost you money. Yes, now imagine that in Asia...........

I am going to leave you with that that thought because I have now landed at Changi Airport in Singapore and since my school gave me an allowance to spend on transport and meals in Singpore I decided to travel into the city in style so I splashed out on a shuttle bus instead of the subway/skytrain/metro/underground (again I gave you options depending on where you live) Kate's Singapore MISTAKE #1. So apparently Singapore is quite a large city and with large cities comes large traffic (oh yeah I am an English teacher btw lol). And where a train would have taken about 30 mins the freaking bus took almost 2 hours. I got to see a bit more of Singapore than I would have on the train but hell it's all apartment buildings anyway.

FINALLY I made it to the rendezvous point which was a McDonald's on the main shopping street in Singapore. My instructions were to meet a man at McDonalds, I would know him by the giant stack of passports and visa papers in front of him. Yes, go with that thought and imagine that you have to hand over your passport and information over to this guy. But thankfully it is all above board and Mr. Wahab works as an agent specializing in working visas and it lessens the hassle that people applying for the visas have to deal with because apparently it is a pain in the ass to do by yourself. So thanks Mr. Wahab.

After leaving my only way out of the country in the hopefully trustworthy hands of Mr. Wahab I went a wandering in downtown Singapore. Is there a not downtown Singapore? Damn confusing city states. Anyway....Orchard Road is a shoppers paradise if you tend to like Chanel, Armani, and Hermes or even if you pretend like you can afford them and just walk in a gawk. Most of you reading this blog know me pretty well/fairly well/not at all and should know that 1) I am cheap 2) I don't really give a flying fuck about labels on clothing 3)I need to be in the right mood for shopping. And that right mood doesn't involve getting up at 2:30am and walking around in 34 degree heat. So me and Singapore got off to a bad start. Not wanting to be sneered at for wearing flipflops in Chanel (also I didn't really care), I toddled off to the "historic" part of town. Getting off the train into ANOTHER fucking shopping mall I managed to claw my way to the surface. This so called historic area comprised of a Presbyterian Church and some reno-ed office buildings. By this point I was pretty hot and my patience was wearing pretty thin so I decided to chill and maybe nap in a movie.

Oh the movie KATE'S SINGAPORE MISTAKE #2- so the only movie that was starting at 1pm was Snow White and the Huntsman. WHAT A PILE OF SHITE! Whatever genius who heard the phrase "Fairest of them all" and thought of Kristen Stewart deserves a slap with a tuna covered in nails. This woman has a face that looks like a slapped arse and is about as fair as slapped arse as well. Yes, it is a retelling of Snow White but Snow White leading an army in to battle after having no military training, not to mention that she has spent about 15 years locked in a tower with no exercise and we are meant to believe that she has no long lasting muscle damage. Yeah okay. Sorry about the spoilers :P

After that atrocity, it was thankfully time to go back and pick up my visa. And it was all gravy. Mr. Wahab didn't run off with my identity and sell it on a black market somewhere. With my passport and work visa in my possession I decided it was time to celebrate with a few drinks. It's me what do you expect I celebrate the opening of a letter with trip down the pub (That one's for you, Christa). I found an Irish pub across the street from McDonald's and went for a drink. Walking down the stairs I realized that women in Singapore might not go drinking by themselves at 4pm on a Thursday afternoon when every person (man) in the place turned and stared at me. I got my beer and I was happy. At one point on that trip I was sitting in an Irish pub in Singapore eating a quesadilla watching Sweden vs Bulgaria play soccer/football. I love globalization :)

Then I got on a flight and came home......bribing a Customs Officer in Bali to get my extra duty free in the country.

What a finish eh? Okay some final thoughts on Singapore. As much as I didn't really see the appeal in the city state I can say that they are prepared for the end of the world. The entire city is connected by a series of underground shopping malls and tunnels so there is enough stuff down there to sustain a lot of people for a long time if they manage to seal it off in time. And in case of a devastating flood or the like they have the huge skyscrapers for people to rebuild their lives in a village in the sky. Any bird people or mole people out there, head to Singapore. You will be welcomed at the Rapture. Maybe you will be the new Gods for a ruined civilization?

AAAAAANNNND on that note...I am going to drink more duty free gin.

See ya later xx

Just another day for me and you in paradise

Well well well...I have been slacking on my blogging haven't I? To be honest I am waiting for interesting things to happen so you don't get day after day of "Today I ate food and pooped", (my mom is going to yell at me for saying pooped but HEY LADY! We all do it).

So what has happened since I last blogged:

I went for dinner at Tyra's house. I still felt like absolute crap but it was nice to get out of the same few streets that I had been haunting for those last few days. The taxi driver seemed very nervous and confused that I wanted to go to a non-touristy part of town and got stupidly lost (but it was still cheaper than the incredibly roundabout way that the driver on the way back took- I'm not even from here and I know that that was the roundabout way). But I digress.....Yes dinner. Tyra's partner is Balinese so they cooked Balinese food for dinner and it was my first non-restaurant meal and it was AMAZING!! Other than the amazing food and finding out that we all don't hate each other, nothing of any real interest happened that night.

The next day on the other hand:

On Saturday, I had my last day (hopefully just for now) living at the beach. My time at the lovely Little Pond Homestay was sadly coming to an end- God I miss that pool!! and I had to move further afield into the city where the breeze is warmer and the rents are cheaper. But thankfully I only am about a 10 min drive from the beach.
I found my little 2 room and a porch piece of Bali and so far I am pretty happy with it. The guy who is in charge of the complex but not the owner! was friendly and hospitable. He even took my money and went off to get me a key cut because he had lost the spare. Yes, I was feeling so crappy that day that I let a stranger walk away with my money and a promise. But before you worry about poor little Kate I already had my stuff inside the apartment and my laptop raring to go. Damn, I love free wifi.
Thankfully Tyra and Gede were coming over to help me get stuff sorted out like a phone and whatnot so Gede worked his Balinese magic and asked the housekeeper? if there was any way to get in contact with the guy who was getting the key. Her answer, I am pretty sure from the look on her face, was " What the fuck are you taking about? We didn't lose the spare. I have it" and promptly walked off to get it.

With my belongings safely locked inside we were able to start our adventure for the day: GET KATE A PHONE. Which apparently if you don't have a local with you can be a bit of an ordeal but again Gede to the rescue. He was in there like a Balinese phone ninja- I need a phone, what phone, that phone, okay, done!
Then we go to celebrate my new phone and my one contact with an adventure to Tanah Lot.

Tanah Lot is a temple that is built on a rock that is in the sea. It is very pretty, very hot and very crowded. But totally worth it. It's really funny because if it was in Canada there would have been signs everywhere saying that the rocks were slippery, please don't run, please don't climb etc in the hopes that they can avoid a lawsuit. I think Bali and probably Indonesia as a whole hold true to the idea, "If you are stupid enough to do it, you probably deserved it". And I wholeheartedly agree with this idea. The one and only safety sign that I saw in the whole place was out on the far point of a rock cliff and it said "No Entry". Might I add that there is nothing beneath this cliff but jagged rocks and the ocean.

Being that touristy really makes your appetite grow so we ended up at one of their fave restaurants to take newbies or visitors and I was not sad about this choice. Who doesn't love eating barbequed fresh seafood on the beach? Especially when you can get the seafood platter for about $6 -and it's one of the most expensive things on the menu. So we are sitting there enjoying our meals with the cool ocean breeze and the occasional visit from the stray cats and dogs that live around and in the temple next to the restaurant. Apparently the restaurant "owns" some of the dogs and kindly asks it's patrons not to feed them as they are well cared for.
Yes if anyone comes and visits we can go to the cheapest seafood BBQ in the west.....actually there are probably cheaper ones but I like this place.

So after a day of actually doing stuff I was understandably sleepy so I came home and pooped and went to bed (Take that Mom xx).

Friday 8 June 2012

If you feel like shit in paradise can you still complain about it?

I don't know if I have mentioned it over the past few days but I feel like SHIT!! And it's not the usual change of diet or drank some funny water sickness. It's can't stop coughing, my ear is blocked and I can't hear out of it, sore throat and so fucking tired all the time sickness. So I decided to have a chill out day- like a doing nothing day today.
I watched a few episodes of Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place in bed this morning. Oh 1998 Ryan Reynolds and Nathan Fillion how I love thee.

Then I finished reading Freakinomics by the pool and started on Shantaram, which I read in India so it only seems fitting to read it in Indonesia....that's logical right.

But all day I have had this crazy feeling that I am wasting time because I am not doing anything and then I need to sit back and remind myself that I am not "on holiday" and I don't have a short time frame to get things done and it is totally ok to just chill out before I start working 5 days a week. With my new found sense of relaxation I decided to get even more relaxed and go get a massage for which the going rate is about $6 for an hour. Soooo much better than the $50 in Canada. Having heard a chorus of "Maaaasssaaaage" from women outside shop and this phrase taking my mind to unsavoury places. I decided to play it safe -which I assume I am ok because I am not some greasy old man come to Asia on a sex holiday...or am I?? No! NO, I am not!

I asked an older lady if she knew anywhere good to go and she directed me across the street to "Black and White", where my masseuse was a 16 year old girl. That is when I started to feel slightly uncomfortable about what type of place this old lady sent me too- Do I look like that type of person? But it was all above board and the spa is actually part of a hotel and she was just doing her training. Personally, I think it is because the older ladies just wanted to gossip and drink their coffee.

When I was walking back from my massage I noticed a bar called Randy's. Now I don't know if you know but Randy isn't really a popular Balinese name. I had a look at the menu and couldn't help noticing the "Canadian Specialties" section on the menu so I think to myself, "Self! You've gotta go in there and eat that there Balinese version of poutine!" YES, that is right ladies and gents I would like to prove all you naysayers wrong and I found motherfucking poutine in motherfucking Bali! Never underestimate the power of cheese, fries and gravy because I feel better now.  Ok so I can't be sure if it was actually the poutine that made me feel sort of better or just the day of not really doing a lot but I am standing by the miraculous healing power of poutine. Put that in your pipe and smoke it modern medicine!

So I am now just hanging out at the pool writing this waiting to go over to another Canadian's house for dinner. As it turns out one of my friends friends live in Bali :D Good times for all.

I might go back to Nathan and Ryan for a bit :D  That's right, I am in Bali and I am watching TV! :p

Second verse same as the first

Day 2 began much like day one did- waking up at the crack of dawn covered in sweat and wishing that my school had sprung for the room with aircon. But alas it's not all great, sleeping with AC on is really REALLY cold. Did the usual breakfast- I am trying to eat at a different place everyday- and then hang out for a bit.

My big chore of yesterday was to go have a meeting at my new school- my driver out there was convinced that he should be my driver for the entire year that I am here and gave me his number and told me under any circumstances I can call him and say "Gusti, come back" and he will drop whatever he is doing and come running. I don't know how I feel about that level of power over someone's life. He was also reluctant to let me go in to the school with out a guarantee that I would call him. I feel bad that I don't have driver loyalty yet.......

I was a little bit early for my meeting at school so was resigned to sitting in the thankfully air-conditioned lobby where I got a look at my new co-workers. Thankfully most of them are 20-30 somethings, more than likely doing the same thing that I am doing and just trying to earn some money to fund their trip in paradise.
One guy that stuck out is the American guy who walked in from outside and said, "Swear a lot in the meeting and you will do great"...Thanks bud. Then a few minutes he walked past again and this time his stellar advice was to "Make lots of racist and anti-Semitic comments and they will love you". To which my answer was, "I'll be sure to do all of that, thanks for the advice". He just smiled and walked away.
Now, there is hotly contested debate between whether he's a douche or was just joking or was a douche who was joking. Only time will tell.

The meeting itself was pretty standard- this is what you will be doing, when, where etc. How to find a place to live, bank account, free trip to Singapore to get my work visa. I am excited for this part :D
I start training on Monday to Wednesday because then I am "technically" not working and the Thursday get to do my Visa run to Singapore. Then I start actual work. EEEK!!! Keep your fingers crossed for me, friends. I will let you know how it goes.

On the living arrangements front I am pretty sure that I found somewhere to live already, it's in a complex of studio apartments and is about $150 a month. It's pretty basic but it'll totally do for the next few weeks and if I find somewhere else or get a better offer I can always move out. It's about a 10 min walk away from my school but in 40 degree heat a 10 min walk feels A LOT longer. Which I figured out walking back to the main road to get a taxi back to the hotel. I just realized to my great sadness that the place that I am moving into doesn't have a pool!!! NOOOOOO!!! It does have a huge front porch though, maybe I can get a paddling pool out there?

After my mid-afternoon of sunning myself by the pool I decided to actually do something productive and walked the other way on the beachfront pathway (which I now knows goes on for about 5km from where I started walking). Now the quick way to get to the beach is to cut through one of the BIG beachfront hotels. Some of them are a lot better at letting people walking through their ground than others- believe me I know! I found that out the hard way. I finally found one that didn't have a guard in the little hut thing and walked through...sneaky Kate.
Along my walk I made friends with a kitesurfing instructor called Arta who had been to Canada a few years ago when he was working on a cruise ship that went to Quebec. I almost called him on it but it took me a minute to realize that the ships could go down the St. Lawrence. I fully trust Arta with my life from our 5 minute conversation and am probably going to go kitesurfing at some point. He seemed to be impressed that I am going to be here for a year so will have loads of time to kitesurf. I also made "friends" with some massage, mani/pedi ladies who kindly insulted my toenail polish- They didn't seem impressed with the fact that I have had it on for a few weeks. They told me to come back and they will make me look really good for my husband........ :s So now I need to get married before I go get my nails done...SHIT!

Nothing else really eventful happened yesterday night........I went for dinner and went to bed...
The End

Wednesday 6 June 2012

Day 1

I am sitting on a sun lounger in the shade of some trees next to the pool drinking a beer at about 3 in the afternoon. Life is tough. This year is going to SUCK!!
Oh I am also pretty sure that these blog posts are going to be getting less frequent as 1) I get more used to the heat and don't feel like just slugging around the pool all afternoon and 2) when I actually start work.

So first day in Bali:
The flight from Seoul was one of the most turbulent I have ever been on, I pretty much had the entire opening plane scene from Lost going through my head the whole time and kept expecting the plane to snap in two and send me (and everyone else) pummeling to our deaths or for the "lucky" few a safe haven on a tropical island with a smoke monster and an "Initiative" of some kind, not to mention Josh Holloway.

But alas we landed safely on a tropical island where in my overtired and jetlagged state I got completely fleeced on a taxi to my hotel. But the driver was nice and negotiated the ridiculous rush hour traffic without killing me and delivered me at my hotel, where at 7pm and after 38 hours I was ready to crash the fuck out but I can't just go to bed straight away can I? NOOOO!! I ventured out into the wilds of Sanur- well to the restaurant up the street and listened to a Balinese man sing covers of easy listening classics. Amazingly awful and great at the same time. I came home and promptly crashed, then I woke up at about 4am. (Stupid jetlag). But on the plus side I got to see the sun come up and the plethora of tiny lizards scrambling over the walls outside. As long as those little buggers stay outside we are going to get along juuuust fine. I attempted to talk to the girl who has the room next to mine this morning- simple questions like "Do you know anywhere good to eat breakfast?" and the response I got was "We are leaving today". Who answers that? I was asking for breakfast suggestions not for you to be the bridesmaid at my wedding!

One thing that I noticed after that is that the majority of people staying at this place are older. Maybe it's just that the people my age-ish weren't awake at 7:30am?? That said it is kind of nice to just chill out and read my book by the pool after the hectic last few weeks I've had. Oh I am so hard done by :p

After my excellent breakfast, of so fresh fruit and toast at the Mona Lisa cafe, I decided to go for a walk to the beach before it got too hot. Walking down the main drag I was accosted by every shopkeeper and taxi driver that passed me. I have already become immune to the sounds of "Taxi? Transport?" or "Come see my  shooop" or the random beeps that taxi drivers will give you so if you look up or acknowledge them in some way it clearly means to want their services. Finally I made it to the beach where after looking at the same map a middle aged woman from Florida started talking to me. Seriously, I need to use these excellent social skills for making some friends or meeting people my own age. But I am afraid they will judge and ridicule me ...............hahahahahahaah.

I made some "friends" within the local merchant population and I was promised that I will get the best rate on any boat to any of the surrounding islands and kite boarding. I felt special until I heard the same offer made to the next whiteys behind me. I am totally kidding.

Well I'm off because I don't think that you want to hear what I had for lunch....Nasi Goreng if you must ask. Can I just say that I like the amount of satay sauce everything has with it here. I'm going mostly because I am sick of swatting ants of my keyboard and picking them out of my shorts AND because there is the cutest puppy ever that I want to play with. (Pictures to follow).

Peace out. x

This one didn't get posted....Read before "almost there" hahaha

Well it's finally here! Tomorrow is the day of days. I am about to embark on the Great Crusade, toward which I have striven these many months. They eyes of the world are upon me. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with me.....sorry got carried away with quoting Ike's D-Day speech. But the situations are similar right? Pretty soon I will be storming the beaches of Bali and instead of dodging bullets and mortar shells I will be dodging drunk Australians and gigantic spiders.

Now I am losing everyone that has no interest in WWII history....sorry again.

I am on part one of my EPIC journey to the other side of the earth. I am currently sitting on the Coastal Celebration staring out at the passing Gulf Islands. You gotta love free Wifi, eh?

I had an excellent last week in Vic, I worked up until the bitter end but in the end was rewarded with 2 relatively decent paycheques and then promptly spent a shit tonne of them on bills and stuff. Why am I telling you this? Like you care what I spent my money on if it was something for you.  I also had 2 excellent nights out with my friends and I can say that I am going to miss them the most. If you read this, you guys rock and I love you. I love you so much that I am thinking about jumping off the ferry and swimming to the nearest island and hitching another ferry ride home.

I am heading to Vancouver and staying the night with my friend and then heading out on part 2 tomorrow. This whole thing still doesn't seem real at all. I think that it's going to hit when I am in Korea and it's going to hit HARD. But this is what I love about it....the absolute culture shock of "where the fuck am I?" and "what the hell am I doing.

All right, going to sign off for now.

Almost there.....

Right now I am sitting at my gate waiting for my flight to Bali. Only 8 hours to go.....SWEEET! And let me tell you if you ever thought that travelling for 38 hours was fun, I can tell you that it really is....in it's own way.
So I last left off on the ferry going to Vancouver...well I made it. And crazily enough I ran into my Indonesian friend randomly at Tsawwassen. I am taking that as a good omen for my trip. Hung out in Vancouver for the night with my friend and then in the morning got up stupidly early and went to the airport. All pretty standard stuff at YVR.

Stuff I learned on my flight to Seoul:
-War Horse is fucking awful!
- I want to be reincarnated as a Korean woman. 11 hours on a plane and not a hair out of place, whereas I get off looking like that thing I dragged out of my drain that one time.
-Korean airplane food is 1000000000000 times better than western food.

Now the fun starts in Seoul where the first person to talk to me is a 26 year old "musician" who just happens to be walking around with some of his demo cd's if I "know anyone in Canada who works in music". He then proceeded to tell me that he wanted me to email him what I thought about his demo and took my name and then started to ask me my height and how old I was (for my profile that he was making me). hmmmmm....

After I left my musician friend I made my way to my hotel where I was assured that it was the "very best room"| and if i just wait here he will get me "the very best towel". I did enjoy my towel and the room. I even enjoyed the random sound checks for a music festival thing that was happening right outside. Korean versions of LMFAO are AWESOME!!! Too bad I will miss the show.

I didn't have enough time to make it into Seoul (which I am kind of glad about because I feel like crap) so ventured around the grocery store that was under my hotel and tried to find dinner. Which is a daunting task, firstly; when you have no way to cook anything and secondly; you feel bad choosing between the adorable cartoon vegetables on the packages (I went with the happy potato over the sad onion).

I woke up this morning, feeling worse but came back to the airport because well, I don't really have a choice there do I? Got a smoothie and a bagel from Dunkin Donuts- pretty average you might say apart from the bagel is pre-cream cheesed when they toast it. I entertained myself  while I ate my breakfast by playing spot the white people- It was like one of those really really hard Waldo pages. Sometimes I thought that I had then but it was an elderly Korean person and the white hair through me.

Weeellll better fly (hahaha). My battery is dying and I can't see a plug anywhere....

See you again in Bali xxx

Moving fucking sucks!!

The title pretty much sums it up.....moving sucks. It's not an deep or revolutionary thought, it just is. How does one person (or two in this case) accumulate so much junk? There is now a huge free for all around the dumpster outside my building, because as my catchphrase of the day is, "I don't care anymore". I have 2 days to clean and get out of here and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Why take the time to sit down and write about it in your blog one might ask? Well fair reader, it is because I find writing therapeutic and if taking 5 mins out from cleaning and packing calms me down a bit then I will do it.

Monday 21 May 2012

Okay so it might seem as if I have forgotten about my blog but there is not a lot happening right now and I don't want to bore people with "I went to work" or "I bought some clothes for work". Because that is pretty much all I am doing until I leave.....

Stuff is coming together

So with 2 weeks to go stuff is finally coming together and it's going to be a long slog to get to the end....but in the end I am going to be in Mo-freaking Bali so can't complain too much. Haha.

Got my place sorted out for the first few nights that I am there: http://purebalitour.com/little-pond Hey for $15 a night you can't complain. Plus it's like a block from the beach. Have I said lately that I am looking forward to this..... ;)

They rented out my apartment and we (potentially) have a date for moving all the rest of the crap out so it's all gravy. Everything is coming up Kate.....of course now I just jinxed something but it wouldn't be an adventure without some sort of hiccups.

All right off to do my day of chores....fun times.

One track mind....

So I am sitting in my room watching Departures, a Canadian travel show, getting psyched up for the next few weeks. And I am trying to figure out if I want to watch the Bali (Indonesia) episode
The last few weeks are the most important and the most nerve wracking to be honest. I am feeling completely overwhelmed at the moment. All the days and months beforehand were all just the "ideas" portion of the planning..."Oh when I go here I can do...." but this is it, it's really happening now.

My apartment is gross right now. There is just piles of stuff everywhere; there's a Christa and Yannick are taking this stuff pile, someone else is taking this, I'M taking this stuff, who the hell knows where this is going?- That's sadly the biggest pile right now.

I can't think of anything else other than Bali. It's completely engulfed my entire thought process right now.

This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship

3 weeks to go....
So I am starting this new blog with 3 weeks left to go until I go to Bali to live for a year. Leaving my little home in Victoria on little (in the Canadian scheme of things) Vancouver Island for an even smaller island in one of the largest chains of islands on the planet.
I thought that I would keep a separate blog from my normal tumblr because I am pretty sure that if I shared my normal tumblr with people who just want to hear about my trip, they would get pretty fed up with hockey, beards and random Batman comics pretty fast.
I have to go to work now but I felt odd creating it and not writing anything.
Peace.
